TRACK 23: THE MURDER OF CHRISTY DAVIS
Summary: In 1992, Christy Davis, 17, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at her home. Deon Haynes, 16, was sentenced to life w/o the possibility of parole for Christy’s murder. After the verdict, Christy’s family attempted to put the pieces of their lives back together, but in 2012, a Supreme Court turned everything on its head. The Supreme Court ruling meant that Deon would be entitled to a re-sentencing hearing because he was 16 when he committed the murder and giving him a sentence of life w/o parole was now deemed unconstitutional. This new ruling highlights an interesting question: do teens who commit crimes that mandate a life w/o possibility of parole sentence deserve a second chance at life — beyond the prison walls?
